Leaning on a Cane

When I was a baby in my mother’s womb,
I wrestled my brother for first place.
He came out ahead, but I had him by the heel,
And that is how I got my name.

Chorus:
They called me Jacob cause that’s what I am.
I’m a crafty, self-sufficient man.
I never leaned on anybody. Oh, I did things my own way.
But now I worship leaning on a cane.

God had told my mother that the blessing would be mine,
So I thought I’d help Him make it happen.
I cheated my brother and lied in my father’s face.
Believe me, he wasn’t laughin’.

Chorus:
They called me Jacob cause that’s what I am.
I’m a crafty, self-sufficient man.
I never leaned on anybody. Oh, I lived up to my name.
But now I worship leaning on a cane.

My sin cost me dearly, I had to run away.
ʻCause my brother was out to do me in.
Well by and by came the time to head back home.
Time to own up to my sin.

And as I prayed one night in the darkness I met a man.
I wrestled Him for my life until He reached out His hand.
He crippled me up with just a touch as day began to dawn,
And all at once it hit me, I’ve been fighting God.

Chorus:
They called me Jacob cause that’s what I was,
But I donʼt fight Him anymore, no, I’ve learned to trust.
I never leaned on anybody, but now I’ve got a brand new name,
And now I worship leaning on a cane.
Yes now I worship leaning on my cane.
